The goal of the project was to design a small shelter located behind the Faculty of Environmental Design (toward the metro). The objective was to create a small open space based on the relationships between form and color in connection with the surrounding environment. The design aimed to explore the development of a three-dimensional form derived from folding techniques inspired by origami. The shelter had to provide an environment that was clean, comfortable, easy to maintain, and well ventilated.

The form acts simultaneously as structure, envelope, and furniture. Integrated benches allow passersby to sit and rest for a moment. Its elongated and slightly twisted shape follows the movement of pedestrians and creates a fluid pathway.

The shelter is positioned at the intersection of several paths behind the Environmental Design building, making it a strategic circulation zone heavily frequented by users from both Université de Montréal and HEC. This placement and orientation demonstrate the relationship between the two schools while also creating a transitional space for pause that encourages observation and user appropriation of the site.

Light-dark contrast is used to distinguish the interior from the exterior of the shelter and to reinforce the spatial experience. The interior is treated in dark green, creating a more intimate and enveloping atmosphere that fosters a sense of refuge and protection from the elements.

A warm-cool contrast is also utilized. A cool colour on the exterior evokes calmness, distance, and integration with the surrounding landscape context. Inside, red, a warm, dynamic colour, creates a more intense and welcoming atmosphere, encouraging a sense of presence and ownership of the space, ideal for a circulation and transition zone.”

This project was completed at the Université de Montréal, in collaboration with Juliette Colmort, as part of the course DEI1012 - Forme et couleur
